Practical Astronomy Show. Kettering. March 11th 2023

Recommended Posts

...well just back - its only a short drive for me into Northants from South Lincs. It was very very busy as i left.

There was/is a good amount and selection of books at the Society for the History of Astronomy. I bagged these - The Messier Album has been on my watchlist for a while. The Lunar Mapping books are to cement an interest that has more recently taken hold - The "Map of the Moon" book of hand drawn maps by Hugh Percival Wilkins is just lovely.

...and while i don't like red anodised kit and strong branding typically - this red anodised WILLIAMS OPTICS losmandy plate was the heaviest losmandy plate i could find at the show. I have a cunning plan (nicked from a fellow SGL member) for a counterweight & dew control and/or powerpack & accessory sledge for the offside of my AZ100 if i mount only a single scope on the other side.  I'm  ruminating mounting an RDF or RACI finder on this offside too because i bang my head a lot on scope mounted RDF and/or finder.

Welcome to the Old Astigmatics Club!

A friendly group of visual fanatics who got together at PAS Kettering for a good old chinwag, in which we discovered that most of us are astigmatic!🤦😂

So ignore anything we say in future about eyepieces not being "sharp to the edge"!🥴😋

Two (yes Two!) Maxbright IIs and a Delos may or may not have been purchased today...😋🤔

It really was nice to meet up with you guy's at Kettering today. It really made  my three our drive each way worthwhile, and better than checking out the astro gear on show - genuinely! The photo even makes us look civilised - well almost!

I've just shown the pic of the Old Astigmatics to my wife. She considered it for a moment and then said "hmm, they all look like astronomers".

I think she thinks we look good! :icon_scratch:

I think your wife is very perceptive. I looked around me at the PAS today and it struck me that there is a sort of ‘look’ to amateur astronomers. Let’s be frank. The  mean (as in average) is middle-aged, grey haired, perhaps tending to slight portliness in some. Mia culpa on all three.  There are some outliers of course, for example women and people under thirty five. But they’re at least two standard deviations from the mean I’d say. ;)

The last time I went to such a meeting with my son (then 38), he leaned to me and whispered 'it's like being in a Breugel painting'. Could have been worse, Hieronymous Bosch!
