Player one releases IMX571 cooled cameras - Poseidon-M and C

Noticed this while browsing for astrophotography equipment (dont need any now, but you know how it is...).

Poseidon-M (mono): https://player-one-astronomy.com/product/poseidon-m-pro-imx571-usb3-0-mono-cooled-camera/

Poseidon-C (OSC): https://player-one-astronomy.com/product/poseidon-c-pro-imx571-usb3-0-color-cooled-camera/

Price is cheaper than ZWO and QHY, but more expensive than any of the ToupTek ones (Omegon, RisingCam, TS) except for the Altair one which has an odd price and is not that much cheaper than ZWO ones.

Tehcnical stuff below:

Poseidon-camera-performance-809x1536.png

From the graphs its evident this is different to ZWO and ToupTek offerings in terms of maximum full well, which is 71ke- instead of the 50ke-. Almost as much full well capacity as the QHY one, but not quite.

But what i find most interesting, and tempting, with this one is that the camera has a REAR adjustable 4-way tilt plate included which sounds very convenient unlike the various models that require you to adjust tilt from the front, so often needing removal of the camera from the imaging train (and making the whole process more complicated).

4-Point-adjust-method-2.png

Anyway, thought i would post this just to let anyone in the market for a cooled IMX571 camera know that there is yet another option to choose from.

Actually the OSC is not cheaper than QHY, when you add VAT and all the import costs it will be close to 2K, QHY under £1900 for the OSC version

https://www.modernastronomy.com/shop/cameras/cooled-ccd/qhy-cooled-ccd-cameras/qhy268c-photo/

And the mono version will be approx £2300 with VAT and import cost, and the QHY version is under £2100 at modern astronomy,

Looks like this one is only for the UK folks to enjoy, as when i try to purchase from here the price stays at 1880£ instead of lowering to non-VAT rates, so still including UK VAT of 20%, which would mean i may have to pay VAT twice as my local customs of course do not care if VAT was paid outside the EU already. These are very cheap for the QHY models, about a 1000€ cheaper than others i have seen sold, but not familiar with this site so no surprise i had not seen them.

The only european shop i have come across that actually stocks Player One cameras is Astroart, a Finnish shop, where it is sold for 2119€ (including Finnish VAT 24%): https://www.astroart-store.com/product/2419/player-one-poseidon-c-pro-imx571-usb30-color-cooled-camera

On the same site QHY OSC for 2899€(incl VAT): https://www.astroart-store.com/product/1204/qhy-268-color-aps-c

And ZWO OSC for 2478€, (incl VAT) a price close to whatever european shop offers: https://www.astroart-store.com/product/271/zwo-asi-2600mc-pro

So looks like this is a tricky question to answer at the moment when currency conversion is volatile at the moment, for some the Player One will be much cheaper than QHY, for some not so much. Still these do not compete with ToupTek cameras, so a hard sell from my opinion. Cant help but feel it should be 10% cheaper and now you would actually have competition with the cheap ones.

You have to choose Europe from the drop down list for the non VAT price….👍🏻

@Stuart1971 @ONIKKINEN Just for info the OSC version at Modern Astronomy doesn't have the ship to europe option, unlike the mono, which is the one that was being discussed I thought...

Ah, sorry assumed they were both the same, but if the OP contacts Bernard at MA I’m sure he will accommodate, it’s probably just a glitch on the website….👍🏻

The reverse tilt adjustment is a nice idea, will go down well with RASA owners.

Yes, nice idea indeed. But I also noted that the tilt plate can be removed and then it has a 12.5 mm sensor distance which could make it possible to fit in a filter slider (although I have not done any calculations). It is at least not possible with the 17.5 mm chip distance of ASI and others.

Not just RASA owners i think, my tilt adjustment system with a newtonian is with kit that necessitates removal of the camera from the OAG because the camera body is wide enough to hide the adjustment screws. I could flip the tilt plate around, but then my OAG is in the way so still needs to be removed. And as a result i have not bothered to attend to tilt 😁.

For someone who has never used ali express before and is finding a bit confusing, can anyone post a link to a cooled mono version of the IMX571 sensor?  What import duties need to be paid?

Many thanks

Adam.

Here you go

https://www.aliexpress.com/i/1005002673884516.html

VAT would need to be paid, which i think you can pay at the checkout stage

I have just checked by putting camera in my cart, you don’t pay VAT, so would need to be paid here, if it gets stopped….the price you see is what you pay, to Aliexpress, with free delivery…👍🏻

Risingcam are among the cheapest but you have to buy it from China as far as I know:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002673884516.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_groupList.8148356.4.4932243fRVejJx&pdp_npi=2%40dis!SEK!SEK+26%2C302.83!SEK+22%2C357.41!!!!!%402100bdec16688527937345060e97d8!12000030049605246!sh

If you rather get if from Europe then Omegon (=Astroshop.eu) is maybe the cheapest IMX571, and you would not have to ship it to China if you have a problem with it:

The QHY from your link above is indeed very cheap at the moment. Just a while ago the QHY ones were clearly the most expensive models out there so looks like there is some healthy competition going on here.

If i was looking at an OSC IMX571 i would go for the Omegon, or the TS versions of the ToupTek camera as they are still by far the cheapest ones. For mono, Rising Cam is the clear winner in price and that would be my choice.

FYI The QHY have never been more expensive than ASI…

I just checked what I payed for my QHY 268M in January 2021 from Modern Astronomy. It was 1554 GBP without VAT but including shipping to Sweden. So it seems that prices have slowly been creeping up, which of course is not that surprising these days. I also payed only 1200 Euro (excluding VAT) for the Omegon veTEC571C in July 2022. Now it is 1550 Euro. So, it does not pay to wait these days.

That would be same as me, Jan 21, £1499 excluding vat.

I am confused myself now, as it states on the rising cam page, that the VAT is added on the advert but removed when you pay…so does that mean the £1423 price is with VAT and this will be removed when I check out, and then I have to pay it when it reaches the UK…??
