Jupiter 26th October

Just a heads up that there is a double transit this evening with the GRS. Should be stunning if the skies clear, wind drops and things steady up. Bit of an ask but you never know.

First moon just in front of Jupiter’s disk now. Very fuzzy though!

Just put the Tak out, Europa is just brightening on the planetary limb. Io in the frame too on Jupiter’s Eastern side. Hopefully stays like this, hazy but will take it.

Cloudy 20 mins ago, clearish now.  I have a feeling it will be one of those nights but I'll get the 'frac out the garage so it's ready after I've spent some time with boss....

Just watched occultation of Io, everything is going on tonight. Poor old Callisto must be feeling left out.

I was actually able to see Ganymede in front of Jupiter with the C8, whilst Europa pushed in front if the GRS! Now the whole spectacle disappeared behind the roof of the house! 😢

Well it's clear here and wind died to nothing, so two out 3. However seeing is pretty awful. Down at 105x with the C6 and even that is fuzzy. Hoping it improves by 9:30 as the shadows make their way across.

It was nice watching Io disappear.

   Tried a combo of eyepieces with 3x focal extender as my lowest fl ep is 13mm.   I think I need something in the 7 or 8mm range to fill the gap.....

How are you finding it now? I found it steadied up just after my last post. Used the 8mm for 187x and looked pretty good. Could see Ganymede no problem. And possibly Europa too. However now a fuzzy mess again.

Getting the odd ok seeing moment where Ganymede disc is peeping out of the limb and the Europa’s shadow has ingressed on the opposite limb.

Finding the shadow rarely has good definition. Varies from a black dot to disappearing entirely! Optimum mag is 81x.

No such problem with Ganymede’s shadow, it’s huge in comparison and is consistently visible. Lovely dual shadow formation when the seeing allows. Looks like the number 2 on a dice. 😁

Viewing Jupiter with the 6" Newt and the Nagler 3 -6mm zoom. Difficulty seeing the moons against the disc although I could see the GRS from time to time. The moons shadow now on the surface and especially Ganymede whose shadow is very easy.

Seeing improved a bit - with the 24mm UFF and 3x tele extender it was looking nice at times.  Now the hazy cloud is back.   

Hooked my dslr to the diagonal to get a few short videos, will see how they turn out...

p.s I remember you for the Turf Hill meets.

Well persistence certainly paying off, just had my best views all night at 114x. The two shadows and moons showing perfect symmetry, just absolutely breathtaking.

Well despite some iffy conditions at times that turned out to be one of my favourite Jupiter views. Actually seeing the two moons in front Jupiter was stunning. And then the shadows. Gave it a proper 3D perspective. I was still buzzing about it this morning. 😃

They were fun though it got interesting when the ponies decided to have a wander through the various setups!   Would be nice for some other meets but I'm limited to where I go as no car at the moment.

 

As for my record shot, it was similar to what I could see too and there were moments that the seeing improved and more detail was visible on Jupiter.
