Narrowband

Really struggling with nebula data.

I have done a few galaxies to start with and have been quite pleased with results ,but im really struggling processing the data i have collected from the veil nebula .i have approx 7 hours of 3 and 5 minute subs ,i used my zenithstar z73 and modded canon 60d mounted to tuned HEQ5 pro mount.

if i put a link to the folder with the light frames in would anyone be willing to look at the data for me please ,i have been using pixinsight.i don't have any dark or flats .dithered every 4 subs.all taken in bortle 4 skys taken over 4 nights.

i also had a go at another the north american nebula i struggled with that as well.not sure if my data is not good but my galaxy images look very nice....

Just go ahead. Plenty of folk around here to help 🙂 Also post an image of what you managed to achieve with PI

So I have had a quick go at this, but I agree it was a struggle to pull out the Ha and Oiii. I am not sure how you got on, but here is what I managed in 20 mins. We could spend another few hours sorting out gradients, vignette etc but my kids just woken up again!!!  I cant see the  Eastern Veil here so I think the light cone at the bottom is probably the back end of it hence the blueish light near the bottom. So a few ideas I have to improve the data is definitely take calibration frames especially flats they are your friend will sort the vignette and any dust moats and will allow better stretching. Also putting in an lenhance or lextreme or any dual NB filter clip in for EOS will be a game changer for you. Your tracking is good and so are your stars (note I killed them here with a bad mask and too much sharpening)! Flats and dual pass filter and you will be loving it!

I managed to drag out more of the nebula with PixInsight, but as Simon says, the use of flats, dark flats & Bias calibration frames will help reduce the gradients. A dual-band filter will also bring out much more of the Ha & Oiii signal in this particular nebula. 

With more time I could reduce the green/brown gradients. I also reduced & sharpened the stars to show more nebula. 

How do these compare with what you managed?

Hi martin many thanks for your help and advice also.i never got this much out of my attempt.i guess a filter is needed and some calibration frames .i need to start swatting up a bit. what are the vertical bands on the image  ?

I align and stack using ASTAP. It works well for me, but I have all the calibration exposures too. You should get some darks and flats as they make all the difference. As it's only 38 degrees here today I may stay in and have a go at your images.

I have seen this before with my DSLR. Not sure what caused it, but it doesn't always appear. I used the deband option in Siril, and (de)select the horizontal/vertical tick box. It worked well and the banding was more pronounced than on your image.

I do all my processing in PI I was PS back in the day and still have it but for me PI is incredible. I use the WBPP script for stacking in there. Don’t quote me on this as I use a dedicated camera but pretty sure you want an canon eos clip in filter but do check with others here as I know when modified some clips may not fit others here can hopefully advise on this. Thanks

I use both.

If I want a quick stack to see what I've got so far then I use DSS but use PI's WBPP for the full stacking process.

For the banding, I did use the CanonBandingReduction script in PI, you can find it under Scripts > Utilities. This dealt with the horizontal banding, but not the vertical. Although I'm not 100% sure the vertical banding is caused by the camera because they're not regular like the horizontal ones, they may be gradients or sorted with the calibration frames. ;)

If they're mono then you haven't told it to debayer the image.

When you've loaded your lights, darks & flats, on the Calibration tab highlight the lights and make sure there's a tick in the CFA images box and the debayer method is VNG.

Now go to the Post-Calibration tab and under "Configuration", DeBayer is set to Combined RGB and the Color Space is reading "RGB"

worked first go martin thank you ,took 45 mins though to do 97 180 sec subs... pc is quite powerful as well.😉

AstroArt has a superb stacking-calibrating system and is very fast. It's also very easy.
