Autoguiding meade lx90 8"

Hi guys, have been imaging DSO, s with my Meade lx90 8" scope for some time now with varying results, I have decided to try PHD guiding. I have read that it is possible to to do this by connecting the handbox to a laptop using a 505 cable via a USB to serial adapter, if anyone has any info about this I would be very grateful, also would it be possible to use a 505 cable straight to USB cutting out the adapter as I see such cables are available. Mine is an early version of autostar and is mounted on a wedge and is polar aligned. Any help would be much appreciated.
