Using the 28mm ep to find the Orion Nebula it looked magnificent, added a uhc filter but it didn't look any different…

Some UHC filters are better than others. I have the Explore Scientific and definitely shows a little more detail than without it or my Baader neodymium which is my most used filter.

I have an explore scientific UHC filter is it worth buying an 0III filter and a neodymium filter aswell would I see much difference or should I save my money

I started off just using the neodymium when sodium streetlights were the thing as I could not find a suitable LPR filter.

I don’t think I have enough experience to say whether you should buy, as I have only been using UHC & Olll for the past two to three years.

A good quality O-III filter delivers quite a bit more enhancement than a UHC on some notable nebulae including the Veil Nebula and the Owl Nebula.

Would explore scientific OIII filter be of good quality it's not cheap but not as expensive as some other brands

I have not used an Explore Scientific O-III so I can't comment on that one. I did have the ES UHC for a while and found it OK but not as effective as the Astronomik UHC that I now have.

I have the ES O-lll too, but haven't had the chance to use it yet.

I also have the ES UHC.

I think, as with all astronomy equipment, you have to stick to your budget and make the necessary adjustments to your expectations! :D

Could I see the Veil Nebula before I bought the ES UHC? No.

Have I seen it since? Oh yes!

As to whether the O-lll will make any difference to the Orion Nebula, I don't know.

It was the Baader UHC-S filter that 1st showed me the Veil Nebula with my 100mm refractor. Since then I've realised that the UHC-S has it's limitations but it still made the difference between seeing something and not seeing anything.

I find that it's worth observing nebulae with the UHC, the O-III and without a filter. Each option gives different results and, in the case of targets such as Messier 42, each option seems to enhance different parts of the nebula. I even try a H-Beta filter on M42 occasionally ! (that is usually a more specialised filter for observing targets such as the Horsehead Nebula).

It's good to experiment and explore what these tools can do. Quite often I prefer no filter but in some cases the differences are really worth seeing.

Hi all.

So it's been 5 days of continuous rain and tonight the skies where clear and dark  so dark I could see m31 with my eyes, so waiting for Orion to rise, looking around found dumbbell nebula at last but everything was getting hard to focus to much dew on ep's after a few minutes (really need to buy those dew heaters). The night was ruined when fog rolled in didn't even get a chance to see Orion 😪

Fingers crossed 🤞 for next time

You're lucky man, I'm in a somewhat similar place in terms of experience in the hobby and have been similarly hunting Orion as it peers into the morning sky at the same general latitude. When I finally got it into view with my 100mm Skyscanner I had to really be acclimated and squinting to see the faintest of smudges in Orion's skirt. I see you talking about filters and stuff to resolve it better and here I am just happy to resolve it, period in a Bortle 8-9 (depending on where I'm observing). Happy hunting!
