I love both the artwork on them and the notes on the back of the cards. In many cases they really emphasize how far our understanding has come since they were issued in 1928

Yeah, I'm excited I found them too and to think from 1928, coming up to 100 year's ago. We'll probably have a moon base by then.

These are great... I'm envious. One of the benefits of early middle-age (born in the late '50's) is the joy of being able to look back on many iterations of the 'future' via all sorts of media.

A sadness is the lack of progress in some areas of space travel etc. following the demise of Apollo.

As a teacher I used to show my classes the science books and ephemera that inspired me as a youngster... It always provoked discussion (and a fair bit of hilarity)!

What a great thread, am already looking around e-bay for some long remembered sets but its such a shame they dont still make them, give me a card in a packet of tea or a toy in a cereal box any day over a cut priced deal.

Alan

P.S. in the 60s when I was a lad we used to call the cards "faggies" and swapies with your mates was great fun.

Fantastic! I think I brought these up in the "what started your interest in astronomy" thread.

Lost years (and several house moves) ago.

I also remember getting books from the library about travel to the moon. Obviously written long before Apollo was planned, so everything was a little more like Space-X's planned vertical landers, believe it or not!

Brilliant find, I had the full album, I spent all my pocket money on the the hard to get cards, I wish I could remember which  ones they were! I also had a full set of the Shell ‘Man in Flight’ coins, thanks to a much travelled uncle.

You didn't have too, most of us young uns had uncles and aunts that did it for us

Yes... looking back on it... in the '60's my mother bought us a pack of fags to give to her mum (my nan) as a present when we visited every Sunday... We contributed to her demise!

Regrets... we probably all have a few! A different world.

I've still got the 'Man in Flight' coins, and my 1966 World Cup Willie periscope!!!!!!!

Wonderful find Nigella. I also collected these cards and they still in the album. We organised an Apollo 11 50th anniversary and the album was on display. I was fortunate to meet Thomas Paine (Head of NASA) in February 1970 at the Royal Society and he spoke about the Grand Tour which is contained in the album.

Thanks, just being nostalgic, lol. Must have been an interesting meeting Mark back then.

Get to see a lot of these sort of things come in to the office - I'm the photographer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers (yep, the one off the telly!)
Most not worth anything, but lovely to look at - especially if (like the lot of us), you're into astronomy/space, etc, etc.
As has been said on here already, just reading the back of them and realising just how far our knowledge has moved on... not just in 100 years , but the last decade or so...

I did start a blog of my findings... I always try to take a snap on the phone when I discover something and have a folder full of images on my Mac at home that I really should get around to sharing!
Enjoy your little pieces of history...

Yes, that's the problem Nigella - too many....' temptations' - I'm under strict instructions from the wife not to bid on things!

Thankfully, I do get to try the odd thing out (Leica spotting scope, etc...) at least then I can say to the valuers that such items are in working order.... so I get to have a play without making a purchase!

Just thought I'd add to your super thread.... it's Brooke Bond though... not PG Tips!

Very nostalgic topic.

As a kid, I had a network of olds in the neighbourhood I used to visit once a week to collect tea cards. I still have a number of my original albums, including the iconic Race into Space. In my adult years, I've continued to pick these up from flea markets and collector's fairs. A few years ago, I found quite an unusual one I'd not seen before called The Space Age, similar to Race into Space but with astronomy cards too. Here's a few pics:
