Telescope case recommendations

Recommended Posts

I have a SW Startravel 102 and am looking for a suitable hard travel case. It needs to be able to fit the OTA and prism only so about 60cm x 15cm internal.

Does anyone have any recomendations for a budget aluminium style travel case.

Cheers

Richard

Is this for mass transit (planes/trains/buses) or personal vehicle transport?  If the latter, simply wrapping the scope and diagonal separately in bubble wrap and packing them in a suitably sized duffle/gym bag is sufficient as long as you don't pile heavy items on it.  If the former, try to do carry-on if at all possible with the same type of bag.

A Pelican style case big enough for that scope might cost nearly as much as the scope itself.  There are the cheap, fake aluminum cases as the OP alluded to.  I would try to look for the cases that look similar to those but have the heavy black panels.  They are more resistant to puncture.

I bought a used Skywatcher ed80 case, for around £40.00 I think. The ed80 and the ST102 are essentially the same tube with different lens cells so the Star Travel fits perfectly, and there are cut - outs for a diagonal, 9x50 finder scope, and a few other bits and pieces.
If you could find one for a good price, I can recommend one, maybe try a wanted ad ?

Dean.

I bought one of these for mine..   Cheap, decent quality.  Dont expect to be able to run over them with a car :D   But my Startravel 102 does great for basic protection and lugging it around.
