Something for solar astronomy enthusiasts ☀️

Grant at First Light Optics together with Neill at Go-Stargazing are hosting a day of family-friendly Sun-related activities and presentations, including experiments you can do from home, arts and crafts, photography tuition and music…

There will also be a competition to win some astronomical prizes!

The events will be streamed live from the Go Stargazing public Facebook page (no Facebook account or login is required). 

The fun starts 09:00 BST Sunday 20th June.

 

09:00 BST  Introduction & competition launch

       Join Grant from First Light Optics and Neill from Go Stargazing, who will introduce the day of events before handing over to Gary for some solar basics and a live stream of the Sun (weather permitting).

10:00 BST  The Magic of Sunlight

       Jo Richardson from Space Detectives will reveal secrets of the Sun, including an experiment that the whole family can do from home.

11:00 BST  Solar telescope live stream & live Q&A

       Join an astronomer for live views of the Sun through a solar telescope (weather dependent).

12:00 BST  Make your own Sun model

       Make a 3D model of the Sun with Mary McIntyre. You will need two pieces of card, colouring pencils or felt tip pens, scissors and some glue.

13:00 BST  Solar telescope live stream & live Q&A

       Join an astronomer for live views of the Sun through a solar telescope (weather dependent).

14:00 BST  Solarcan solargraphy camera

       Capture incredible images of the Sun’s path across the sky using the long-exposure pin-hole camera, with Solarcan inventor Sam Cornwell.

15:00 BST  Solar telescope live stream & live Q&A

       Join an astronomer for live views of the Sun through a solar telescope (weather dependent).

16:00 BST  Our nearest star

       Learn fascinating facts and figures about the Sun with a beginner’s presentation by Dave Eagle.

17:00 BST  Competition winners

       Neill & Grant will announce the winners of today’s competitions and close out the daytime events.

19:00 BST  Introduction to solar imaging

       Join Gary Palmer for an introductory talk on how to capture incredible images of the Sun.

20:00 BST  Solar image processing

       Gary continues his presentation on solar imaging with a session on how to process captured data.

21:00 BST  From Herschel to Hawkwind

       We round off the day in style with Astronomer and Musician Peter Williamson and his presentation “From Herschel to Hawkwind”.

12 hours of events must have taken a lot of planning! I'll be tuning in and I'm sure my boy will be interested too! Thanks to all those involved in advance :)
