Astromod DSLR - single frame - what should it look like?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys!

I have my first session with a modified SLR. I need a reference point. Please show your single frames from modified SLRs.
Here is mine

image.thumb.png.6fadd1e3da70bb82eae4280f9f5fb7ab.png

Canon 600D, 90 sec. ISO 800

The histogram was 1/3 wide. I don't know if I should keep longer exposure with the same iso?

And this is my result of 40 frames. I know that not much, but the nights are just short and the cloudless sky rarely appears.

The is a nice mage.  You have some good detail and have managed to control the stars well.  I do suspect that you may be able tease some more detail of the nebula out of this one.

Below is a single sub of the Eagle Nebula taken in July 2020 using a modified Canon 1300D.

In general a long exposure on a Ha modified DSLR will have an overall red caste, like Jem's image.

But a lot depends on which White Balance you have selected on the camera.

Whether you chose to apply that when you converted the Raws.

And what processes you went through to get the image displayable on SGL.

Thank you. The person who was doing the astromode set me up to normal balance (whatever that means) for day/normal photography.

This is a single 2m sub from my astromodded 600D. I've opened it with irfanview and just saved it as jpg but I think irfanview does its own stretch so maybe not an ideal candidate for comparision.

Do you use a filter for light pollution?

a) Here's a single 180s frame from the end of May. Taken with IDAS D2 LP filter & Canon 600d - Bortle 7 skies. I've debayered & applied an Auto-Stretch.
b) Rough process of 104 subs taken May 2020 / 2021.

Both images reduced in size by 50%.

Cheers
Ivor

Look at Jem's "red" image, and Ivor's "cyan" image, and you see how hard it is to say what colour the subs should be.

My subs of The Veil are red, but look neutral in a Windows preview.

I tried your google drive link but only got your stacked image and various PHD2 screengrabs, not the subs.

It looks terrible... Probably it doesn't make sense without a filter.

What kind of filter did you have in mind ?

Here's one of my M101 subs:

M101sub.jpg.5ce49914c6f90233c195f1e177b4e1c3.jpg

300secs @ ISO 1600, so roughly 4 times the data of your 120secs at ISO 800, and still looks dim.

I took 39 others like that and stacked them, and got a pleasing result.

So I wouldn't immediately say your sub was terrible.

Any filter that reduces light pollution. It's probably because of LP my subs are so bright / milky?
