The many faces of M42

I got out last night for the first time in ages, and got a few hours in just trawling usual favourites using my 8” f8 on the EQ platform. I popped the 24mm Panoptic in towards the end, largely because the only phone mount I could find was my Fonemate which works well with the Pan. These were take with my iPhone 11Pro and given a tweak and crop in PS Express.

The first three are 1 second exposures, the last one 10 secs if I remember correctly. UHC filter first, then same image converted to mono, then without filter and finally the 10 Secs without filter. I managed to catch the Trap quite well which is pleasing. They are quite noisy, but perhaps if I take more shots I could stack them to reduce that next time.

Can just about make out the E in the penultimate one? Impressive for a smartphone in Bortle 7/8.

Thanks Magnus. Yes, there is definitely something there isn’t there? E was quite clear visually but F was pretty much invisible; perhaps the faintest hint every now and then.
