East Anglian Meet -Reminder

centroid

Recommended Posts

Don't forget the next SGL East Anglian meet is next Sunday (8th), and that Arthur (ambermile engineering), is coming along to show us some new kit that he has been developing.

If its a clear sky, we can also make use of the unobstructed southern views, and relatively dark skies.

If you haven't joined been before, then PM Bill (Bill£), and he will provide you with the necessary directions.

Look forward to seeing our regular visitors again, and perhaps some 'new faces' too.

Dave

I'll give it a couple more days to gather up any more interested parties then I'll PM some directions to all that have posted in the meeting thread.

8th Feb - 18:00 onwards. Note we usually pack up about 10:30 as it is a quiet residential area. (You know how rowdy us astro geeks can get !!) :(

Dammitall Rog! I was hoping to prove to you that you made the right choice converting to EQ instead of forks! Oh well, maybe next time then... unless curiosity gets the better of you and you just can't resist being in on the secret :(

I'm just back from collecting the stuff from the anodisers - looking pretty neat if I do say so myself... but then I would, wouldn't I?

Remember please though that anyone who sees this system - despite the copyright/design right/pat pending stuff - is to be held to complete non-disclosure until the official release. If you don't think you can stick to this rider then I am not going to be able to show the stuff.

Arthur :)

but I'll have to pack it in by about 8.30 latest I think.

No worries Arthur - although rain is forecast, there is a slim hope that the cloud might clear long enough to do some observing later on?

Duly noted, no problem as far as I'm concerned.

See you Sunday

Sorry I know someone will be upset by this but is astronomy outlawed in East Anglia?

I live at the west side of East Anglia, went to uni at Norwich and worked at BT in Ipswich, presently work in N Essex. A club fairly close to me is not the most approachable. BUT they do list when they will meet, where it is and the times, and all openly.

This East Anglian meeting has so far not not said where. Why is it all by PM's? Is no-one on SGL supposed to know. I cannot decide to come over as nothing says where, I have to read it all to get a date and time from the postings.

What's wrong with:

The East Anglian group will meet on: DATE

At: LOCATION

At: TIME

All are welcome to come along.

Hmmm!!

I also worked for BT, 40 years in fact, and for 20 of these years at the Martlesham Labs, and I live in Suffolk. I don't know what relevance that has, but there you go

The SGL local meet is NOT a club, as such, but a group of SGL members who live in the Anglia region, and like to get to together for a natter, and sometimes a bit of observing, or occasional tutorial.

We do not have a committee, constitution, nor do we pay a membership fee, but simply 'chip in' to cover the cost of the venue, and refreshments.

Any of SGL's members are welcome to come along, and all those that currently do so, found no hardship in in sending Bill (Bill£) a PM for location and directions.

So, we have no need to publicise where we meet, as we are NOT a club!!

You are correct in your assumption that your comment "is astronomy outlawed in East Anglia" would upset some, as I most certainly resent your your views on our little group.

BTW, times and dates are generally arranged to suit the majority of those wanting to attend. That is, a provisional date for the next meeting is announced in this section of the forum, and those wishing to come along, will say 'yay' or 'nay' to that date., which is then adjusted to suit the majority.

This system has worked well so far, for all concerned, and will only change if the majority of those attending, wish it to.

A club fairly close to me is not the most approachable.

I think you will find our group very approachable, if you ask, Capricorn.

As Dave says it is not a club but just a meeting of like minded SGL members. I think if you search back a few posts on the local meetings page you will get a good idea of the local area where we meet.

However, I think your attitude has just about guaranteed your exclusion from the next invite list

Bill my point was you are saying you are an SGL meeting and "advertising" on the SGL site. So why not state where and when you meet? I know easily what the club at Witham is doing, I just look at the site and events and read when and where.

Concerning PM's I am still waiting on someone to look at theirs so an offer I have made for some equipment can be accepted or not. PM's I find are not picked up all that quick. :laughing2:

The point of where I have worked etc is because I find that people think others wouldn't drive any distance to get to a meet. I don't mind a drive and am familiar with the east side of the UK, say Norwich to Chelmsford and west to Cambridge. Used to travel the A12 to MH daily (MLB, B83, SSTF). If I knew where you would be I should be able to get there easily. It would not be a trek into the unknown nor I suspect that great a distance from me.

What ever is to be on show sounds interesting but I need to know where to get to. Again it is a meeting so say where without someone having to search for it. Make it easy.

As for approachability, I have already been excluded :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

may I please be allowed to add a brief comment before this gets out of hand, if it hasn't already.

Capricorn, (not knowing your real name doesn't help) when I went to the first meeting I had no idea where it was to be until the last minute. Not because it is a secret but because when you don't know, you don't know. I am sure if you sent a pm to one of the members above you would have received the same gracious reply that I did.

Bill, shall we try to withold any barborous comments until we find out whether the anonymous Capricorn is going to turn out to be the best person and new mate you ever met or a real pita? I have felt for some time that East Anglia is a desert regarding astronomy and finding this group has meant that I have someone to share things with. Let us at least try new members out before banning them.

Ok

Mr Capricorn (I'm assuming Mr), I said that I resented your comment/approach, but did not say that you would not be welcome to come along.

Bill is a great guy, and a more friendly and approachable person, you would be hard pressed to find. However, he works long hours, is on 24 hour call out, and has an elderly father who isn't always in the best of health. So, I guess your 'post' caught Bill at the wrong time.

As for me, no you didn't catch me at a bad moment, I just tell people straight, what I think.

The forum, is open to public (non member) viewing, and the decision was taken from the outset, that publically advertising where we meet, provided no benefit. As we are not a club, we have no need to advertise for members, and any member of SGL can readily obtain that information by sending sending a PM expressing their interest. A system that has worked very well up until now, with no complaints. Yours being the exception of course.

I think if you look back over the 'posts' in the Local Meeting section of the forum, you will find that the other SGL Local Meets, operate in the same fashion, so its not exclusive to the East Anglian group.

I would add that although we are all SGL members, and meet as such, the local meets are are totally separate to the Admin of this forum. Admin just allow us to refer to these meetings as SGL local meets.

However, you have expressed your view, and I have responded honestly with mine, so 'end of story'.

As far as I'm concerned, you are welcome to come along to the meeting, and I'm sure on reflection, Bill will think the same.

It would nice to be able to address you by your name, as opposed to a psuedonym, but whosoever 'Capricorn' is, if he or she cares to PM Bill, myself or any of those attending, we will provide you with directions.

The fact that we meet in South Suffolk, just to the south of Ipswich, was made clear and public on the forum, from the outset.

So there, you are, your comments/approach can be 'water under the bridge' as far as I'm concerned, and you are welcome to join us tonight, if you wish.

Why thankyou, I think so too :(

... but I need to know where to get to. Again it is a meeting so say where without someone having to search for it. Make it easy.

I suspect you have not yet considered the fact that what is being planned here is a group of people meeting in a field in the middle of darkest North Suffolk with some expensive kit. Would *you* like all and sundry to know that such a meeting was happening? I live in darkest South Norfolk and around here we have to book a policeman three days in advance, I suspect it's the same down South too. I feel a little safer knowing that the venue is *not* public knowledge to tell you the truth.

Its been pretty clear here all day, and isn't too bad at the moment either, with some good breaks in the thin cloud.

There's going to one very large bright Moon tonight, but as usual, you are most welcome to bring gear along, and make use of the dark sky, and comfortable facilities that we have.

We will let Arthur show us the exciting new 'kit' he has been developing first, as I understand that he needs to get away reasonably early. After that, you can go outside and do a bit of practical stuff, or sit in the warm and socialise.

I'll be there by 18.00hrs.

Whatever the weather it will be enjoyable as always Tim :)

We are on an Amber Alert as far as weather goes, for tomorrow and Tuesday. But then after the 1987 fiasco, the met office tend to 'cover their back' at every turn now :(
