Canon 50in f/1.4Lens

Hi all

I am looking to pick up a 50mm lens for astrophotography.  I have seen the Canon lens on both f/1.4 and f/1.8 formats, there is about €100 in the price difference.  Looking online, I have read how f/1.4 created curvature and is best stepped down to f/2 or f/2.8.  What advantage, if any, is to be gained by going with the f/1.4?  The camera is a Canon 5D mark ii.

Thanks

Paul

You will most likely need to stop down both so no real advantage.

The f/1.4 is as close to a red ring as there is possible to get but at a much better price.
The f/1.4 is a very nice lens for general photography, I have one but never used it for astro
as I have better alternatives.

The 50mm f/1.4 was a vast upgrade to the standard 50mm f/1.8 in both build quality and focus action with its USM motor but the difference is smaller now with the newer 50mm f1.8 STM having upped its build quality with improved AF and with a metal mounting flange. If I was buying for astro I would stick with the f1.8 but also think about a nice Samyang or even a Sigma/Tokina zoom instead.
