Narrowband

RASA 8 Optical Window

Recommended Posts

While waiting for the clouds to clear to get first light on my RASA 8, I have removed the clear screw in optical window as recommended by Celestron. It would appear that this cell accepts 2” filters, so my question is given I am using a OSC camera with this scope, could I install a 2” L-enhance dual narrowband filter into the optical train using this cell, rather than using a filter drawer?

To close this out, I can confirm a mounted 2” filter once removed from its mounting will fit into the RASA 8 optical window mounting.

It’s a bit of a faff to change filters, and I wouldn’t recommend it for a mono set up, but it can be done without purchasing additional hardware.

Thanks for the tip, for NB imaging I’ve ordered the IDAS NBX (the same one Gorann has gone for with his RASA), which is better suited to fast systems, I presume the standard IR/UV cut should be OK for broadband.

The main barrier to imaging with the RASA continues to be the terrible weather, just a couple of nights would be nice.

Despite what the manual says, Starizona specifically says to leave the clear screw-in optical window on the RASA 8.  Assuming you are using a ZWO cooled camera with 6.5mm of backfocus when the black T2 adapter has been removed, they say "The optical window in the RASA 8 will stay in place.  The Filter Slider accounts for the extra optical path length of the filter glass."  From https://starizona.com/products/starizona-filter-slider-rasa-8-zwo-cooled
