See, thats the thing, If I knew that spending 20 hours or whatever would give a reasonable chance of getting that extra data, then i'd do it, but I would hate nothign more than spending the time and getting nothing else worthwhile, when the night could have been spent on another target.

I think i'll just have to move somewhere with many more dark clear nights!

Indeed Tim, I think is the old 'law of diminishing returns' coming into play. You can keep going and going but I think you probably plateau out at some point and you have to get much more to get much less if you follow me! For mere mortals like us, our patience is the limiting factor plus some actual clear skies would help too .

I have a plan in regard to some dark sky action. With property prices dropping like a stone, I'm planning on buying something out in the middle of the Fens or the Lincolshire Wolds with a bit of land and just sort out some facilities so we can spend what ever time we need out there for some Astro fun. Give it 6 months, we should be able to buy half an acre for about £10...

Apparently you can get a plot on the MOON for that. The buses are few and far between though.

Getting an extension lead for some power might prove a little tricky too....

If NASA/ESA had any heart they'd set up a bank of user accessible remote telescopes on the dark side of the moon, and charge pennies to connect.
