Successful noise reduction or not?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to reduce noise on some zoomed in pictures of the moon i've made but i'm not sure if i'm approaching this the right way...

It looks like it darkened the overall image a lot (which i'm not that bothered by).

But I was wondering if there are better ways to do this.

Currently I just applied a black image over the original image and 'blended' them together with one of those premade options.

First image is the original one with noise.

Second image is the editted version.

Third image is of photoshop, what I did.

Thanks in advance!

Try using Registax program. Designed for this stuff. I don't do much moon imaging but this software makes it easy to get a clean sharp image.
This tutorial will start you off.

Basically take a hundred or so images so that you are" lucky imaging" and then feed them into Registax.

I'm a super basic user of it, and I'm sure others will have better suggestions

Also, are you talking about the noise on the sky background part of the image?
What camera/lens and camera settings are you using as usually you can use a low iso setting on the camera and a short shutter speed which will give you
noiseless black effectively. I looked at an old pic I had- settings are 300mm lens, ISO 200, F8, 1/200th second exposure. No noise on blacks.
