Another “newbie” wanting EP advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Like a lot of new amateurs I am completely overwhelmed with the choice of eyepieces.

I have a Sky Watcher 250P Classic on a dob for visual astronomy.  I have recently purchased the Hyperion IV 8-24mm zoom (with 2.25 Barlow) as my general roaming around EP.  Now potentially looking for a high powered EP with large FoV to get those detailed views of planets and DSOs - the question is which should I buy?  I was thinking something in the 2.5-6mm range and happy to go up to say £250 price point for the right EP.

So, what is the wisdom?  A 6mm and Barlow, or some where between 2.5 (pushing the scope) and 5mm without Barlow?

Thanks!

Lee

I agree very much with the above post.

A 6mm and a 5mm, without a barlow would be useful eyepieces to have but the very high magnifications just won't deliver.

With the barlow lens, your zoom should be more than enough.

If I was going to add an eyepiece it would be at the other end - perhaps a good quality 26mm - 30mm wide field to offset the zooms rather narrow angle of view at the 24mm end ?

Thanks for the advice...    I managed to catch Saturn briefly with the Hyperion + Barlow and with the small FoV it was moving out of view quickly, so thought a fixed EP at high mag with wide FoV would give me an improved image for longer...  Hmmmm, some points to consider....

Any advice on a good 26-30mm?

APM Ultra Flat Field 30mm if 72 degrees is wide enough for you.  I find it sharper and color free edge to edge than the ES-82 30mm.

I know the problem. That's one of the reasons that I use 100 degree eyepieces with my 12 inch dob.

I have the APM UFF 30mm and it's a fantastic eyepiece. Louis D is quite correct, it is colour free and sharp across the field.
