March New Moon Spotting

It’s time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge. I use the term New Moon in its classical sense of one’s first sighting of the Moon after its monthly solar conjunction (Dark Moon). Sharp-eyed observers may attempt to spot the less than two-day-old Moon after sunset today, March 25th.

Photos and descriptions of the young crescent Moon late this month would be welcome additions to this thread.

At first I thought it was going to be hopeless once again. After being unable to find the small crescent of the young moon, I gave up and focused on Venus, just one day past maximum elongation.

It was excellent, showing the phase very clearly.

Deciding to go back inside, I glanced down lower into the quickly darkening sky.

There was the Moon!

Heavens above called it 1%, but I believe it might have been a bit more than that. After all, 1% is tiny.

Took a few prime focus, then hurried to get some widefield as well. Had to fight the clouds that suddenly appeared off the Gulf of Mexico.

Like always, thanks for the heads up. The members of the SGL have made my getting back into this, addiction, much more enjoyable.

Lovely crescent moon here tonight with Venus blazing away above so thought I'd take a quick snap through the scope. Took some video too but I'll have to process that later.

Doesn't do it justice really. One of those times when just looking with your eyes or a pair of binoculars is better.

I totally agree. I have never been able  to come close to photographically capturing the beauty and atmosphere generated by a crescent moon with a bright planet close by.  I have told my kids to make sure they put me in a care home (when the time comes) with a good western or eastern horizon. I may not be able to use a telescope then but hopefully I will still be able to enjoy that whilst sitting on my commode!
