Quick lunar session - 3rd March 2020

Recommended Posts

Was quite busy this evening, but I found a little free time later on and managed a quick session with the Telementor and Leica Zoom. I thought this would be quick and easy, but actually the Leica wouldn't come to focus even with my T2 prism, likely because I have a ClickLock fitted to the visual back which swallows up some inwards focus. I popped a Barlow on and all was well, the additional mag was helpful anyway.

Clavius is well positioned right now, looking grand, and Rupes Recta clearly visible too. Copernicus is right on the terminator, one half a brilliant arc out in the darkness. I also saw some tiny dots of light nearby which I assume were some of the Carpathian mountain peaks. Plato and the Alpine valley are also well placed, but the Telementor is not up for counting cratelets!

Nice to get out there and make something of the rare clear sky.

It was a good opportunity for a quick go at the moon tonight. I had a brief chance to go out so I rolled out...... the VX14 of course!

I started with a 12mm Delos for 153x and ended up staying with that all the time.

Had a good look at the moon - the Alpes and Appeninus looked good.

My eldest son came out and had a look at the moon, M45, M42, and Castor. This was nice as my family don't come out very often!

Nice one @Paz. 63mm plays 350mm! I bet your views were just a little higher resolution!! 🤣🤣 Never mind, the moon seems to look amazing whatever you view it with, good to take the chance to get out.

Yes any scope is good. The vx14 beats any other scope I've looked through for detail but my previous go at the moon was with a 72mm and was just as enjoyable.
