Hello John

yes not a problem bud OK i Basically intend to split the meeting into two separate halves. After consultation from one or two people I have decided to swap the evening around from my original thinking

Because of the number of complete novices who are planning to attend

the first part will basically be in the format of a welcome lecture from myself called first steps into Astronomy followed by a question and answer session which i hope some of the more experienced members will partake in then we will break for Coffee/ tea and Biscuits supplied by yours truly and a small amount of time for some socialising the second half I then plan to use for the mundane but necessary stuff to get the club set up IE committee membership forms fee setting that sort of thing and just to keep you totally up to date both Steve and James from Flo have said they are going to attend so may well rope them into the night some how as i intend to use Flo as the clubs preferred supplier .

Any Astrophotos any of you guys have or other related stuff would be most welcome as the more we can show, the greater the encouragement we should be able to give to our new found family members so to speak

hope this answers all your questions

but if not or if you have any ideas please let me know so that we can make this first meeting a success and as of today looking like almost 30 people intend to come

regards Pete

Hi Pete, I will be there, you have my email already I believe, I have even agreed to drag the wife along, she holds the purse strings so I have an added reason :( Funny enough, last weekend I went up to hackpen hill off the wroughton to broad town road, I was totally suprised at the light pollution up there bobbing its head up from the town. Anyways, I love satellites if thats of any help. Looking forwards to this big time as Swindon needs something more local.

Hello Dean

thank you and you are more than welcome to attend the more the merrier and thank you for your kind offer that would be excellent.

I really cannot believe the response i have had ,I new it would attract a few people but never imagined so many this club is obviously desperately needed .

sorry to the guys at wiltshire Astronomy society if i am stealing your thunder but I'm sure we will have many occasions were we can combine our efforts this is in no way meant as a rival to your outstanding efforts and works and I'm sure there is room in the area for an interloper

oh Steve if you read this thread don't panic bud wasn't planning on dropping you guys in it was hopping you would just be available to give your usuall totally spot on, unbiased opinion and expertise to anybody interested in buying a telescope It seems to be a constant source of doubt fear and trepidation to newcomers and not so newcomers alike so loosen your tie and take a deep breath OK

regards Pete

I think on behalf of WAS that in no way do we think this is stealing anything, in fact, completely the opposite in that the more the merrier. Mike and a few others have been to our BBQ and a few other events, and I guess knows that we run a very informal and fun club for beginners to more experienced users. The area in fact needs to have more help in terms of outreach for schools and public events. Our chairman and a few of our retired members do a lot of work already, but your club I hope will help augment a very active astro community in the west country.

I for one wish you all the very best indeed, and as your meetings are on different dates to ours, hopefully some of our members will attend your meetings and vice versa.

We already produce a newsletter for the North Wessex group of societies anyway, (covering Beckington Astro society) so maybe we can work on helping you guys with that side too. Our websitre has the newsletter so you can see what it is we do.

In terms of speakers, we have a huge network of contacts and have built up a large number of both high profile (Ian Ridpath, Pete Lawrence to name but two) and regular speakers...so again, if we can help out with getting you guys going, I'd be more than happy to help on that front.

Anyway... nice one...and as Swindon has some meaty light pollution, your members are also more than welcome at our observing nights in Lacock and Cherhill Downs (darker than most of Portugal the spot we have).

Sincere and very warmest welcome from WASNET

Hello NickH

Thank you so much for your very kind words and encouragement and thank you also for your kind offer of help. I will definatley be interested in your help with guest lecturers .

And May I take this oppotunity in offering you guys a welcome to come to our meetings whenever you are free. Swindon does indeed suffer from some major light pollution issues but we have been fortunate in procurring permissions to use Barbury Castle car park and the big field which hopefull should negate a lot of the light polution issues Oncee again many thanks for the hand of friendship and look forward to our clubs working closely with each other in the near future

Dark skies and good seeing Pete

hiya guys

OK just to keep everybody up to speed with Swindon Stargazers club

I have now completed the paperwork and signed on the dotted line and payed for the room so its Houston we are go for launch

OK the evening itinerary will be as follows

first part of the evening i will be giving a small introductory lecture entitled first steps into astronomy for those of you not new to our amazing hobby I beg your indulgence please the majority of people who have contacted me which is now standing at 30 are brand new to Astronomy so in truth the lecture is more aimed at them but I'm hoping some of you old timers can pitch in so to speak . This lecture will run for about 30 followed by a question and answer session there will be coffee/tea/ squash and biscuits available for all . The second half will be the setting up part sorting out membership committee fee's that sort of thing . OK because of the size of the hall i need to ask anybody who intends to come but who hasn't contacted me up to now could you please do so PM WILL SURFICE this room only holds 50 and i don't want to be turning anybody away lastly could we endeavour to clear the hall by no later than 9:15 pm i need time to tidy away any ways that's it look forward to seeing you all there that's at the Lawn community centre swindon on Friday 20Th Feb at 7:30pm catch you guys later Pete :(:)
