If my pupils could still accept the full exit pupil of my 7x50 Zeiss Jenoptem bins I wouldn't be looking for anything else.

Try this to assess the diameter of your pupils - it's simple :

Get a set of spiral drill bits, graded in 1/2 mm steps. Go outside (your pupils will adapt within a few minutes, not so the retina), and look, one eye covered, at a bright star. Hold, beginning with about three millimeters, a drill bit (blunt side up), 15 to 30 cm in front of your eye (you may as well go farther away with it -stars send parallel light rays out of infinite distance). You will see the starlight, passing the bit's edges and entering your eye. Now, work your way up to larger bit diameters; you will still see the starlight. At a certain point, the used bit will block all the starlight, and the star's image will have disappeared. Repeat two or three times; the bit's diameter just below the occluding bit is the diameter of your maximal dilated pupil. Now test the other eye. I've assessed for my eyes 6.5 mm (left eye) and 6 mm (right eye) that way - very satisfying at age 66. It's astonishingly precise, when repeated.  Learned this from an article by German observer Uwe Pilz.

Hi Steve - I've just bought the Pentax SP on the basis of your review (excellent site thanks!).  They seem very good but I wonder on the basis of the above whether I  should have got the Nikons.  That S@N link doesn't work any more.  Do you have a copy of the review or could you comment please?

Late to the party as usual - I must have been having a Xmas break 🙂

I see from posts elsewhere that you've made your own mind up about this already. Nice review! For reasons best known to S@N, the "best 6 under £200" has now been incorporated into a "best 10", one of which is a 20x80 :

I was considering a pair of Helios 15x70’s to complement my Bushnell Nature 10x42’s, but reading this I fancy the Nikon’s to replace the Bushnell’s. Not totally happy with the Bushnells and so intrigued as to hoW much better the Nikon’s could be.

Wow, realised that I didn't come back to my own thread, dur...

I eventually went with the Vortex Crossfire 10 x 50s, using the FLO voucher I received with my retirement to ease the cost. Very happy with them, though the large eyepiece glass did take some getting used to after the small glass of the Jenoptems
