The Joys Of Wider Doubles

Recommended Posts

I've generally tended to go for doubles with separations up to say 10soa at most, but have recently had much pleasure from examples with say 30, 40 or so seconds of separation.  They are easy to locate and view, and still look close at low powers.  Plus, they are often nicely framed with other stars in the wider FOV.  Very recent examples:

37 Cet: triple, visual double, mags 5.2/7.9, 51" separation - the brightest star at the corner of a large "L" (1.34deg of field using the 8SE) - the fainter companion looked yellowish.

9 Ari: another triple, visual double, mags 4.8/6.7, 37" sep. - I used the Dob this time, so had about 2deg of field, which took in a nice curve of four stars and a distinct Y shape on the other side.

74 Psc: same configuration, matched 5th mag stars, 29" sep. - lovely bright pair, well framed with several fainter stars in the 1.34deg field.

I have several more in the same constellations lined up for my next sessions.

Doug.
