Sketches

Bedfordshire not as flat as first thought

Hi!

About two months ago my wife and I purchased an observatory-sized telescope - for just £35!

Portable, extremely lightweight, and with what seemed at the time like a HUGE 80mm diameter tube, I had no idea what to expect when peering through the scope!! Would we see aliens eating cheese on the moon? Probably not, but you never know!

A few views later and we were hooked. There were no aliens to be seen on the moon, but it looked breathtaking nonetheless!

A bit of Internet research later and I was stunned to learn that it is possible to see galaxies from Bedfordshire, no less! It's so flat here you usually can't even see two miles away!!

Our excitement wavered a little when it seemed like all galaxies looked like smudges, but we've since learnt in forums such as this one that there is only so much you are going to see directly through the eyepiece. And anyway, as smudges go, these are pretty amazing ones!

Next up we're hoping we can pick out more detail and colours when we try astrophotography as soon as the skies clear!

We've recently purchased a C8-ngt, an Onyx 80mm refractor, but most importantly, warm clothing!!

Take care,

Luke
