Photoshop channels question

Hi all,

I'm a bit stuck...

I have my colour image and I can split it into channels, manipulate the channels, for instance merge Ha into the red,  and then merge it back together into an RGB again.  Cool.

So, when I have split the image I get the R,G,B grayscales at the top as three images.  Now, how do I make a copy of one of those please - red again say  -  so I can then use it as another layer as a luminance? I can't see how I do that....

A bit lost with it!

Select the red image, type Ctrl A followed by Ctrl C.

Select File - New

Hit the OK button

Type Ctrl V.

Thanks Steve, that does it.  It was the "File>new" bit I didn't get.

That's a nice method. Ps has so many ways of doing the same thing. You can also click to activate your chosen channel and 'Save as,'  giving it an appropriate name. It's always interesting when you find that someone uses a different method because it may lead you to new ideas.

This is one reason I like old PhotoPaint. You could copy an image and 'paste as new image' or  paste into an image as a new object (=layer but can have an irregular shape).

Much prefer this type of action, I have a thing against using any shortcuts with PS.

You're not alone: I spent a week locked in humorous conflict with an SGL guest who preferred to scroll through the menus rather than use the shortcuts! Personally I like them but my hands are too small for one or two of the three fingered variants. In the next life I'm going to be taller...

Who can you be talking about?  Lol.  

I don't like shortcuts because it is something you need to remember to make it work,  Using the menu's seems far more logical to me and plainly explains what you are doing, and you don't need to worry about learning the code for it. 

I use just one shortcut in Photoshop because I don't know what the "non shortcut" version is, and that is Ctl/H (which is logical because H stands for "Hide").

I was "winning" for a while, but you tricked me by not telling me what the shortcut stood for - which means I didn't learn that bit of the tutorial.  

Yes it was very funny.

To save having to create a new file for the copy.

Select the layer of your RGB image and hit Ctrl-3, Ctrl-4 or Ctrl-5 to select the R, G or B channel.

Hit Ctrl-A and Ctrl-C to copy that channel.

Click 'Create a new layer' icon (next to the trash icon) at the bottom of the layers pane to create a new layer above your image layer.

Hit Ctrl-V to paste the selected colour channel in the new layer.

Done.

The Ps authors do try to put a bizzare logic into some of the shortcuts. Curves is m which has two curves in it as a shape. Then there's satUration, repeat last Filter, colour Balance, Levels, etc. I find that if you spot the logic (I'll accept that m is a bit tenuous!!!) you can remember them.

Another big time saver is to save some routines as Actions. I do this for things like the Lab colour trick and the soft light colour trick.
