Eyepieces

Help confused.

As eyepieces can be very expensive (more than the scope itself) What would be the best eyepieces to get for a 12" dobsonian? Are 2" eyepieces better for this scope?. I woudn't want to go spending £300 on an eyepiece if there was no reason to do so. Is there an optimum range i.e no lower than 6mm etc, i like the sound of a 2" ultra wide angles etc????? help! :shock:

Hi Dave,

Could I just point you to this article about how to choose eyepieces. It answers some of your questions, but not all. Once you've read that you will hopefully have a clearer picture about which eyepieces to choose.

Baader Hyperions are well-recommended if you have a "fast" scope and are on a budget.

If you have a 12" dobsonian it's likely to be an F/5 or so and will benefit from decent eyepieces although you don't need to spend £300+ to get decent views.

Saying that I've got a 31mm Tele Vue Nagler and the views are SUPERB through my 8" dob - the eyepiece is worth almost twice the value of that scope !.
