In case anyone else is considering this method, do remember to remove your grandchild from the hole after measuring :)

James

Is that obligatory or optional? 😂
PS I have no Grandchildren at present time.

I notice you are using your foot to knee to gauge the depth.

Indeed I did for an image, its deeper now and I used a more reliable tape measure to make certain.
Especially with my dodgy knees.

I stuck my Grandson in the hole and when it was up to his shoulders it was good enough.

More info required (to help with my planning.

If your pier hole was 3/4 of a Grandson deep, how many Grandchildren wide was it and how many Grandchildren tall is your pier?

Looking good Alan, I am also very much enjoying the photos of your toil.

........mostly because I know my own solution involves a lot less digging  🤣

Keep up the good work and keep the photos coming.

3/4 OF A Grandson square by 3/4 of a Grandson deep. The pier, to the point where the NEQ6 sits is 1.87 of a Grandson, tall.

Hope that helps.

( 30" x 30 "x 30 " deep in old money ) I think that I was supposed to go 1 metre deep but  my Grandson had to go home so I made do.......

Oh noooooooo, I need to dig deeper still as hole in new money 700mm (28") x 700mm (28") x 550mm (22") deep.
I stopped as I hit a solid stone / clay bed and had dug enough, my back knows about this today.

That's good enough.

I was hoping so Gina, as it is getting very difficult to dig now.
That is a big lump of concrete.
I hope 🤞that the 250mm (10") concrete pier will be well anchored by it.

You will be fine with that Alan. I dug mine so deep  because my pier is 56 " high to accommodate such a long telescope and to make sure that everything was as rigid as possible.

OK, mild panic over.
Thanks to you and Gina for the confirmation to leave alone.

My pier will be a little shorter than yours, but I am using with a refractor and may upsize at a future time.

Didn't know you was that far ahead Alan,  crab apples make great ammunition against neighbours lights..( did i really say that! Yup, that might of slipped out) or cold water on a hot bulb, catapults ( bloody kids around here)..

I might need your measuring grandson as I don't own my own one yet

Good luck, but you seem to be getting on just fine

I crept ahead on the quiet.

No Crab Apples yet to test this theory out so far, only a sapling last year.

Thank you, yes I have been making progress,
but suddenly got very cold feet on the cast option as it is so literally set in concrete!

I am now in a tizzie on just casting a foundation and then hang on and get a steel jobbie.

By the way that hole of yours is looking deep and good, met any Australians yet?  🤣

If you've hit a solid clay and gravel bed, then that should provide a good founding for the block.

If you go through it, you might find soft clay and you don't want to found on that.

Be kind to your back.

WOW!!!  That is some DEEP hole!!

That's exactly what I was thinking - I'd be frightened that something might crawl out of that from the other side :)

Colonel Tom now

Dave

He made me laugh today on radio - he replied to a reporter's question on what it felt like to be 100 with "I don't know I have never been 100 before" . :)  What a guy, modest as ever he said I will always be Cpt Tom, he's having the time of his life.  What an example of life to the full.

So was I James.
It would have helped with the Bowie song that chips into my subconscious everytime his name is mentioned.
