is very useful for telescopes as well, particularly from a light-polluted location.

This site is good In the sky.org. Your location can be saved to see relevant information. I always read Astronomy Now for the monthly night sky guide.

+1 for Stellarium.

If , like me, you have 'blind' areas behind houses, trees and fences, Stellarium will help you identify the bits of sky that are available, from dusk and onwards during the night. Once you have selected a few visible constellations, do a web search for DSOs in that constellation, or just zoom-in on the Stellarium view. In the winter months, what you can see at 7pm is very different from 11pm. A planisphere is fine, but Stellarium adds planets, comets and the Moon.

Phillips guide to the night sky is good for 'target of the month' ideas and is published every year. this, combined with stellarium is generally what I use.

The Skymaps download is very useful.

If you have a mobile phone then Apps like Skysafari have a tonight's best search option which is useful.

I have an app called Mobile Observatory which has something similar, but is also a great resource for much astro information.

As well as having a planetarium/skymap, there are lots of objects that are visible.

Sky Safari and Sky View apps are really handy as well. Sky Safari has a top ten list of tonight's best objects that's under the search menu. I also use the Sky and Telescope Sky atlas, the bigger spiral bound version.

I generally use SkySafari - but have used SkyMaps in the past  - I got sick of printing it out every month and wasting paper, so I stopped - but it is just a PDF so it is still useful on the computer.
