Skywatcher Star Discovery alt/az goto mount.

I have been considering an alt/az goto mount. The telescopes that I would like to use are a Celestron C5 and an f7 100mm ed refractor. Also some basic photography with my DSLR. The GT wifi mount looks good, but has a payload of 5kgs. The Star Discovery specs for payload vary from 5 to 6 kgs. It also has some DSLR facilities. Comes with a 25mm tripod, but unsure if the Star Discovery can be attached to the 1 3/4 inch eq5 tripod. If anyone uses this mount, I would be grateful to hear your views and experiences.

Thanks.

Martin.

Martin,

I had one. Capable mount, but I really didn't get on with it. I sold it. And the guy that bought mine sold it too...

And it wasn't because the mount in question was suspect... It wasn't smooth when moving it manually and when using it in automated mode it was nowhere near as pleasant to use as other mounts.

It does a job. Reasonably well. But it's functional rather than a pleasure to use...

Thanks for your reply. I am looking for an alt/az goto because I can no longer star hop where I live. Light pollution is too severe. There does not appear to be many such mounts available.

There is the GT wifi. Not sure how people get on with it.

Simple mod for Star Discovery mount. These guys https://www.ebay.com/str/dish39 can make longer custom pinout cable (around 20cm will be enough) for wifi adapter which can be hidden inside the battery compartment. Battery holder has to be taken out. I didn't modify the compartment cap yet so a tape is used to hold it. After making the hole in the cap it will be really neat and safe setup to keep wifi dongle inside.
