The 6.1 megapixel D40 is getting on a bit now (now a teenager) and will probably have Nikon's infamous star eating auto noise reduction.

I only asked because i cant afford a new one and just wondered if it was worth using

There is nothing to stop you using it as long as you understand the potential limitations. Search the forum for Nikon D40 to see what can be achieved.

I had a Nikon D40 for a few years and loved it for regular photography (eventually replaced it with a more convenient Micro-4/3 Olympus).

As for astrophotographic use, I did my first experiments with it (before transitioning to a modded webcam and then a planetary CCD). For simple Milky Way stacking and Solar System single-frame or a few-frame stacks it did the job:
