M51 - DSLR vs ASI1600mm

Recommended Posts

I'm still getting to grips with my new ASI1600mm-Pro, but managed to give it first light in the last week.

Both images tightly cropped.

The first is from a couple of years ago and was the best I achieved with my Canon 1200D under a Bortle 4 sky in the UK.  A CLS light pollution filter was used.

The second image is from LRGB data captured with my ASI1600mm-Pro out here in Malta under a Bortle 5 sky.  I've probably over-processed it a bit and the sky may be a little dark, but I'm still finding my feet with LRGB.  The stars are also slightly off-round, possibly due to some breezy gusts or the tracking being slightly off.  I took 120 x 20s for the luminance and got it down to 103 after the rejects.  RGB was 30 x 60s with 2x Binning for each channel.  Dithering, Darks and Flats were used except for the RGB where I didn't dither.

Both images were using my SW200p and NEQ6 with Orion mini guide scope and ASI120mc for guiding.

I was very pleased with my first M51 in 2017, but the difference in quality with the ASI1600mm is striking. ?
