 It basically places an optical amplifier in the optical train - usually electronic in form of a photon multiplier tube. If you google general use of Night Vision aids then that would be a good starting point.

It has had a name change for some reason I think it now means Electronically Enhanced Video or Visual Astronomy ( or something like) it all means the same thing really, using a dedicated Video Camera to capture DSO's.

Mainly people using video or more recently stacking short exposure to build up decent enough images... not the hours of exposures that the imagers take and them spend more hours in photoshop tweaking it further.
