A Quick Tour of Orion and Monoceros in Ha

Recommended Posts

From my latest trip to Cornwall in February, here's a few of my images around Orion and Monoceros, taken with my modded 1100D, Samyang 135mm and Ha filter. First up, here's a composite including a wide shot of Orion and Monoceros I took a while ago, to show the everything in context.

First up is the Angelfish Nebula, it's about 1h20m of data. It was shot on the night of the 22nd in pretty poor conditions with lots of cirrus cloud shuffling through frame, the sub brightness was all over the place. This timelapse which I took the same night shows what I was shooting through:

So a good decision to use the Ha filter I think. While I was waiting for it to get fully dark I had a quick go at the Belt and Sword region.

About 30 minutes of data I think. I've cropped the image down and had to denoise it fairly aggressively. It's interesting to see how little structure the Running Man shows in Ha.

On the 26th I had a go at the Rosette and Cone in much better conditions. This is 46 minutes of data, really pleased with this one. I also spent about 3 hours shooting them in colour but frustratingly I can't get it to stack.

It's good to be back imaging again, pretty good haul for an old DSLR and a camera lens wrapped in a sock to keep the dew off - I have a couple more targets to process. Hope to get my scope and 1600MM Cool up and running in the Autumn.
