I don't know the exact figure Louis but the eye relief with the 32mm TV plossl seems to position the optimum eye placement above the rubber eye cup. The eyeguard extender seems to put the eye at the right position and you get the benefit of the soft eyecup to keep stray light away from the eye / eye lens. Having tried both approaches I felt that having the eyeguard extender on the eyepiece made it a much more pleasant experience to use. Moonshane gave me that tip 

The downside is that it adds further to the cost of the eyepiece.
