Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.4.38-v7+ armv7l)

In network manager on the RPi, if you edit the wifi connection does it show you "Automatically connect to this network" and "All users may connect to this network" under the "General" tab, and are they both checked?

If you tab down through the boxes then it should show you the two options I was talking about earlier when it scrolls.

James this linux lark is a funny old thing why if we are both running the same os albeit maybe because I am running gnome I do not know what Gina is running but both LTS why my commands did not work ? strange  but well done resolving Gina's dilemma.

Which command doesn't work?

Ok, so as far as network manager is concerned the interface is there, looks like it's configured ok, the AP appears to be visible and all's right with the world.  It just won't start it when you want it started.

At this point I think we have to look at circumventing network manager.  Let me have a scroll back and read through your previous postings.

nmcli d worked

nmcli r wifi on worked

gina@asc2:~$ nmcli d wifi list

No command 'nmcli' found, did you mean:

Command 'nmcli' from package 'network-manager' (main)

nmcli: command not found

as this worked for me strange?

Ah, might just be that the relevant package isn't installed on Gina's system.
