Catching carbon.

Some really colourful red carbon stars around just now. I was lucky enough to get a gap in the clouds , very surprised at how bright and red UU Aurigae looked .

Some of these are greatly variable , reports of "Hind's crimson " ( aka "Vampire "star) for example ,depend on catching them bright. I've shown these as show stoppers from being a "wow !" to "where is it ?" Small aperture helps in seeing colour as does ,

clear skies ! Nick.

Caught the Auriga carbon stars in my 16x70 binoculars earlier this week, wonderfully red and bright, quite captivating, interesting as you say, responding to smaller aperture.

Thanks for the list and helpful information Nick, I love the carbon stars I’ve seen so far, so I will try and have a go at these next time out with my little Heritage 130P. ?

Have a look at 19 Pisc.

It's quite bright at 5th Mag and is a deep cherry red to my eye.

And it has the most fantastic name . . . . Torcularis Septentrionalis !
