Hello and welcome.  You already have the most expensive bit of astronomy kit - a great dark sky site.

Not a bad shout to start enjoying the night sky with eyes and binoculars... But beware: it's not long before aperture fever kicks in for observers or 'must have better kick syndrome' for imagers so enjoy this phase while it lasts!

There is a potential very good and very cold, clear sky forecast for NE tomorrow, Saturday night. Would be a good opportunity to use the binoculars you have. I also wonder whether there would be any Aurora activity? I aim to get out though not as far as Kielder, just need to reckon on the road conditions.

Hi yes, the forecast for Kielder tonight looks great, but I think driving there tonight is asking for trouble. I had to abandon my car last night. Shame.

Hi thanks for the warning, I hope that you are able to get access to your car today and not too far on foot. My plan would be to head up the A686 but then take some backroads NE of Kirkwelpington. The snow had been receding a bit today in Newcastle but still plenty around, based on all the sledging action. An alternative would be a slip road, I sometimes use in snow bound conditions,  just off the A697. I've taken my Nissan Note onto these winter backroads a few times but its hardly ideal, something to think about. Enjoy the Kielder sky.

Hey Scarp I feel bad about warning you off now... Been for a drive up to Kielder. Crystal clear skies, -7. Saw a green glow briefly which I assume was the Aurora, the Milky Way, so many meteors, and just more stars than you can take in. Mind-blowing.

That sounds great, I took a chance on the roads up to one of my dark sky places, only the final stretch was dicey. -9c pretty good conditions, but didn't catch the aurora glow.
