Looking for some where in Wales

Recommended Posts

Hi

Bit of a random one. Im looking to rent somewhere in Wales or the South West in April time for a week or so with the idea of taking all my kit and doing some Astro Imaging - if the clouds dont  play I will take the opportunity to do some hiking.  so the place ideally will have some hard standing and ideally WiFi and Power etc. but a little remote so im away from the lights etc. Any pointers appreciated

Regards

John B

I would try somewhere in Pembrokeshire. I used to holiday in Newgale and the surrounding area and the stars were amazing. Very dark. A fair few places to stay, but I would contact a few of them after doing a search and ask if there area is free of any direct light (Farm etc).  Book it around no moon and fingers crossed for clear sky :D I am sure there are a number of places mid Wales that are great but I do not know myself. Good luck.

I recently found a map showing the best places in the UK for observing (combination of low light pollution and clear skies). It showed that the Pembrokeshire coast and the south western end of the Gower peninsula were both good bets.

Mid Wales is dark and has a Dark Sky Park in the Elan Valley area. Brecon & Pemebroke are a bit near the large conurbations in South Wales

The Milky Way as seen from my observatory in Mid Wales- there is about 60 miles of Green Desert between here and those large towns in South Wales

We have friends who rent out a small cottage at Nanternis on the coast at the south end of Cardigan bay.  Just google Nanternis Cottage.  Dark skies for sure, not so sure about hard standing by the house, as the garden is limited.

I would agree about Pembrokeshire as I was staying at my aunts last year who lives in manorbier, the sky was excellent, truly dark sky and no light pollution. I got a brilliant view of the milky way, in fact this was what got me back being interested in astronomy.
