Bruce MacDonald
Just a quick note to everyone with a casual interest in variable stars that omicron Ceti, also called Mira, is about to brighten in the next month or so with maximum brightness predicted for the end of December. In 2007 it reached magnitude +2.0, its brightest for over 100 years. And another Mira-type variable star, chi Cygni, is at maximum as I write this. If you know Cygnus well you may have noticed an extra star in the "neck" of the Swan when scanning. It has the largest range of any known Mira type variable and when I last looked it was at mag +4.0. Lady Isabella
Mira observed very easily this evening with the naked eye, taking into account the moonlight I estimated its brightness at magnitude 3.8.Last night I estimated Chi Cygni at mag.6.4.
