USB hub....

I'm glad somebody here knows [far] more than I do.

I have just ordered a Startech mini-USB hub. USB-C cable to 4x USB2.0

If yourPC/Laptop has a USB 3 port, then should be ok.
If your system only has a USB 2 port, then the USB 3 hub your intending to buy will be configured to  level 2  USB. Subsequently, all devices that are attached will be the same.
A USB 3 port is universal and backwards compatible, it should  run all previous incarnations of the USB format, but you can't have USB3 hub into a USB2 port and expect USB3 performance.
If all your devices use the  USB2 format, then it will work, but any modern gadget that has the ability for USB3 will only receive the performance that the original port and host controller provides. Plugging in a USB 3 hub into aUSB 2 port gives you USB 2 performance, and quite possibly, something you may not even notice, but I did, as some of the Site displays on my windows 10 do not display, unless each device is getting the full power, plus I had to change some settings in the registry in W10, but that's another issue!

My win 10 laptop has 1 USB 3 and the rest are USB 2,so thats good i can plug the hub into the 3 port.

Sounds like a solution!

I've just checked out OWC's Thunderbolt 2 Dock for my MacBook, giving me a whole host of outputs and charging points only to find its very expensive, so  I'll need to browse a little more!
Still probably going to end up with an Anker USB 3  7+3 powered hub or the Anker 9+1 maybe both.

Quick follow-up on the Orico hub.  I assume you're powering it via a 5.5/2.1mm jack plug back to a 12V supply with a 2A fuse.  Did you manage to find a pre-made cable or make one yourself (I miss Maplin...) ?

It comes a 5V 2 amp power adaptor,which i assume is what you would need.

Yeah - it's a 3-pin plug so I'd rather run it from a 12V DC supply as I'm not in an obsy and don't like having mains plugs/sockets exposed to a damp atmosphere
