March is bonus month at work so I decide to go for a bit of a radical upgrade in the EP department.

Out went:

  • Explore Scientific 82° 4.7mm, 6.7mm, 8.8mm, 11mm & 14mm
  • Explore Scientific 68° 20mm & 28mm
  • TeleVue Nagler T4 17mm & 22mm

...and in came this lot...

The astute amongst you will have noticed that there is space for another high power Ethos :icon_razz:

Derek

Looks great.

££££££++++ in glass.

£15 Maplins flight case???? (at least our EP collection has something in common)

Don't they deserve something bespoke?

Paul

PS. I'm just grumpy because I dithered when your Nagler 22mm popped onto the classifieds. Hope that it has gone to a good home.

Well one thing is for sure no one could ever accuse of doing things by half,  congratualtions on the new glass, my bet is you will like them.

Thanks, Alan - I'm certainly not known for half measures

I decided to buy them new so it was a slightly cringing moment when I pulled the trigger. Those nice people at Telescope House gave me 10% discount so I've almost managed to persuade myself I got a bargain

Looking forward to giving them all a good road test.

Not a Maplins case but nothing special either. Might treat myself to something more special once I stop buying eyepieces. I bought the Nagler zoom to give me some high power options but plan to replace with Ethos EPs when budget allows. I wish TeleVue did a hard case - I just don't like the idea of having a few grand of glass in that very expensive soft case they do.

It was gut wrenching letting go of the 17mm and 22mm Naglers but both went to good homes so it's not all bad.

Very nice Derek

I have the 31 Nagler and the 21, 13, 8 and 6mm Ethos. I've wondered about the 17mm but I don't find a large gap between the 21 and the 13 with my scopes to justify it I think. Similarly with the 10mm Ethos which is reputedly one of the nicest in the range.

I've Powermated the 8mm and 6mm Ethos so I can see the appeal of the Ethos SX 4.7mm and 3.7mm's. I currently cover those focal lengths with Pentax XW's but I might be tempted by a 4.7mm Ethos if one "came along"

I've owned the Nagler zoom 3 times but for some reason I've never really taken to it for reasons that I can't quite fathom out :undecided:

Derek,

I like a man that is not know for half measures, sound like a cue to pop in for a single malt  .

I will take that as an instruction, Alan. Balvenie 14 year old will be my weapon of choice

I think we are quite close to one another at SGLX, John. Happy to bring the 17mm over to say hello and let you pop it in your scope to see what you think of it

I forgot I had this case and bought it from a second hand market years ago for $2. It was from one of those swimming pool specialist places originally. I was using it for my aquarium stuff some years ago and have only re-discovered it. The holes were already there and fits most of my extra's in quite well. I can't see the plastic lates lasting long though which are just push and click latches. It might be worth checking out your local pool specialist to see if they have any old ones laying around out the back. You may pick one up for under a 10'er.

*latches

I wish there was an edit option here for your posts, even for 30 minutes would be handy. Very annoying not being able to edit.

There is once you have made enough posts, I think it is 250.

I used to go through foam like nobodies business, I think because of the heavy eyepieces. So, I decided to try several layers of exercise matting, which worked a treat and hold the eyepieces firmly in place.

The exercise matting is a great idea, Mike.

The more I think about it, this is probably the best idea anybody has ever had about what to do with an exercise mat

Hi John.

The bino viewer is only a cheap one but it works great. I use a pair of cheap 16.8mm Kson orthoscopics which on their own don't really thrill me. They have poor edge correction. But in the bino viewer, which also has a X2 Barlow screwed to the nose piece, the orthos are superb. I truly love the XW's and I doubt I'd ever part with them, but for the moon and planets the bino viewer with its cheap orthoscopics delivers outstanding views.

Deepspacehunter,

It is funny but I like TV and Meade SWA as well, it must be to colours, The blue UWA's are not at all bad from the first run though I have seen a number of poor reports on the newer 14mm UWA that was out a couple of years back.

I had the first one from about 2008 and that was a superb eyepiece, wish I had kept all of them in truth, but I would still have bought the TeleVue's, can't have too much of a good thing.

Which I have now added another Peli 1300 for my white light and Ha eyepieces

post-8355-0-68111200-1426004401_thumb.jp

Peli 1450 for my GIRO Ercole http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/product/peli-1450-case/ Which I went and got another with the intension of putting a LS50Tha scope in it but instead got the LS60Tha which comes in it's own box. I'm sure it won't be long before I find something to put in the surplus 1450  :D

Peli 1500 for my 2" heavy weights http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/product/peli-1500-case/

post-8355-0-22622600-1426005091_thumb.jp

Which only felt right I get another for my 1.25" and balancing friendly ep collection

post-8355-0-91122500-1426005168_thumb.jp

I'd originally started out with a Maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/flight-case-with-foam-n70ap flight case as have many others but after realizing just how much ££££ was being put in to a lightweight ally case I felt it was worth getting a case I know I can rely on to protect what is for me an investment in years of observing pleasure.
