Comet 46P/Wirtanen

Recommended Posts

Comet 46P/Wirtanen in its thirteenth apparition, located on constellation Fornax and shining at magnitude 7 was photographed in this wide field image taken through a photo-lens from Namibian austral dark skies. Its turquoise coma reaches 45 arcminutes, larger than full moon, and will be growing in size and brightness until its maximum approach to Earth on December. In the image can be intuit a short ionic tail toward norteast.

Some pending images:

My last image of comet 46P/Wirtanen taken from Southern Hemisphere, on November 17 from Australia. With a green coma of 45' apparent diameter and a ionic tail more and more visible. The bright blue star is Mu Fornacis with magnitude 5.3.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen photographed on November 29 with a brightness at magnitude 5 is already visible at naked eye from dark skies. In this wide field image the gassy envelope of comet, shaped by diatomic carbon which confer it a greenish color, reaches an angular size of 1 degree: twice the size of Moon viewed from Earth; the photography also shows a ionic tail which departing from nucleus extends 40 arcminutes toward northeast. Comet Wirtanen will increase even more its brightness and appaerent size unto its maximun approaching to Earth at middle December.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen photographed on December 8 through a telephoto lens from Teide Observatory. Its coma maintains an angular size of 1 degree and a short tail which be perceived toward northeast (to up-right). At the moment of take this image comet was a brightness of magnitude 4.5 although only be observable weakly at naked eye from dark places because its brightness is distributed on the big area of object.

From Teide Observatory in volcanic caldera of Las Cañadas, every night you can see a small lights procession ascending to Teide peak, are mountaineers which climb all nights until its 3718 meters altitude for gazingfrom top the sunrise. But this time seem they walk up the mountain to reach a greenish tone fuzzy object located above skies: is about comet 46P Wirtanen that is approaching Earth in these days and we can observe it at naked eye from any place our planet.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen shows in this wide field image taken on December 10th 2018 a huge coma with 1.5 degrees of angular size, three times the size of Moon seen from Earth. With a global integrated brightness at least in magnitude 4, as reference the brightest star to right is 94 Ceti with magnitude 5. The inner coma contrasts exhibing a whitish color, also the faint tail toward northeast (to down-left). The field appears scattered with tiny galaxies, some visible through comet atmosphere.

Nearly at zenith, comet 46P Wirtanen can be seen catched between vanes of spider which holds the camera situated on focus of Telescope TAR1 in Teide Observatory, meanwhile is photographed. This panorama includes the Pleiades star cluster near center of image, and a little beyond the red trace of California Nebula. At down, Hyades open star cluster, including the bright star Aldebaran, shape central part of constellation Taurus.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen photographed early morning on January 6th 2019. Its coma has angular diameter half degree in this image with elongated shape to southwest toward seems there are some tail. Between constellations Lynx and Ursa Major on a field of faint galaxies, the comet has near magnitude 6.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen photographed on February 10th 2019 when passing near bright star Theta Ursae Majoris of magnitude 3. After its maximum with magnitude 4 on past December, here the comet has dropped until magnitude 8 with a greenish coma which also has reduced condensation and angular size to 10 arcminutes.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen on March 10th 2019, while moves away keep going down in brightness until magnitude 10, and its coma decreasing in angular size until some 3 arcminutes. Half dozen small galaxies also can be observed in this field into Ursa Major.
