How to measure read noise from image

Recommended Posts

Hi!

There is so many topics relating read noise and adu values so I'd like to know how one measures it from image. I'm using nebulosity 4 and don't know how to see how much of read noise is in the image. I know something about reading mean value from pixel stats, but don't know what am I looking for. Is there calibration first or what?

Thank for reply

Try this:

http://www.aicccd.com/archive/aic2008/CCD_stack_calculate_gain_by_stan_moore.pdf

Or this:

http://casa.colorado.edu/~bally/Current_Course/ASTR_3510/Useful_documents/CCD_Gain.pdf

However, there's one complication.  If you are using a one-shot-colour camera or DSLR then it is essential to separate the colour channels and do the calculations on each colour channel independently.
