Horsehead now in colour

This is 3 hours of Ha from a few nights ago and on 28th Oct I took nearly 4 hours of colour with a QHY8 camera.

ED80 with 0.8 reducer/FF.

After nearly 4 hours the hh was still very dim. The processing has been very difficult mainly because of a huge amount of marking on the chip. The QHY is nearly unuseable now so will have to find a way of getting it clean. Disappointed with this image after the amount of time it has had. It just lacks the detail a mono camera can deliver.

It's very interesting to see the way that nearly everyone process out the extended Ha beyond the bright stuff and ignores the detail in the dark foreground part of nebula...to produce this picture perfect version...after all that I still love this version...

I'm going to give this region the 4 hour treatment and see whats really out there...im going through a "natural" phase thanks to a certain writer in AN...

Mik, I think our monitors are probably calibrated a little diffrently since on my screen that looks a little harsh. It has brought out all the dust bunnies though - masses of them at the bottom of the screen

Definitely not jpeg artifacts Mik, they are there on the original fits. They aren't like typical dust motes though. Just hope the chip is ok.

I think a modded jpeg could do it George. Have seen some great HHs from DSLRs

Martin, on my 'astro calibrated monitor', your first image is the most pleasing, the second at first sight appears crisper but this is a bit of an illusion and the stars have taken on a bluey tinge. Mik's version is too harsh but I can see from his version what you mean about the 'dust bunnies' - or whatever they are. I wonder if the freezing has dissolved particulates and spread them on either the CCD face or the rear of the optical glass cover?

Thanks for the comments everyone. The second image has more detail in the Ha, I quite like the diffraction rings as well but it would be an easy job to mask all the changes bar the Ha.

I think you are right Steve. I hope it's not behind the cover slip, that would be pretty difficult to sort out I imagine.
