How to effectively drop from 12V DC to 5V?

I need to drop a 12V DC leisure battery to 5V for a remote USB to ethernet extender. So far I have been using an extension lead powered wall wart supplied with the extender, but this defeats the object of simplified powering - everything powered by the leisure battery.

The supplied wall wart is rated at 5V, 2.0A..My mark 1 design consisted of a 5V linear voltage regulator with a 10 micro F capacitor at both input and output pins. The extender connected USB devices start to behave erratically after a few minutes, and when I touched the enclosure, it's very hot! Obviously I’d neglected thermal management.

So my thinking now is a 2A rated linear regulator (L78S05CV) with heatsink + thermal paste.
I've read that I should add an inline resistor to remove some power dissipation from the linear regulator. However a beefy power resistor wont fit in my existing enclosure.

Any advice gratefully received.

dont connect it the wrong way round, got positive and negative mixed up once and a capacitor narrowly missed me as it shot across the observatory!

I looked at this item at £4.99 yet wanted £25.99 for delivery "Dick turpin" wore a mask. And the UK wants to deal with Europe beyond me

I buy my stuff from a good French ebay seller with free delivery and also from Spain for strange stuff not available in france only a couple of euros yet the UK think it is ok to try and rip people off that is all I am saying.. and yes your link £3.49 for delivery that is more realistic and would pay that or tracked for £8.49. But 26 quid come on...

My guess, since the seller lists UK only shipping options is that the Global Shipping Program has attempted to calculate a price for France on the sellers behalf. If the weight isnt set correctly this would be rather high.

Does show as Fast and Free for me though, so something weird going on. Either way probably best to buy local ?

I have the same problem on another well know site starts with a and ends with n with a z in it some vendors will and some won't delivery abroard when trying to get from uk site and not available on french site as my native tongue is English. but that is life

Easiest quick fix - put a 0.1uf cap at the output of the 7805, as close as possible, it's not to smooth the output but to stop parasitic oscillation which causes rapid overheating and also fit a heatsink! A couple of square inches of aluminium will do.

Better solution is to use the switch mode regulator from in a decent multiway car 12V to USB adaptor.
