What do they clean scope with?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I got my Star 71 back after being collimated by ES Reid and a bit of a wait.

I opened the lens cap and out came the smell which seemed very petrol like.

Does anyone know if they use something that might smell like that to give the optics a clean? Just curious.

Thanks in advance

Maybe Baader optical fluid?..

According to its MSDS, it's just 25% ethanol and 35% propan-1-ol (propanol).  I doubt that would smell like petrol.  Perhaps he used xylene or similar?  It's more of a solvent than cleaner, though.

From my chemistry days, sounds like Isopropyl alchohol. Propan-2-ol. Isopropanol .Colourless, flammable, strong odour. It is a structural isomer of 1-propanol and ethyl methyl ether. Evaporates quickly.Great optical cleaner also used in hospitals as a hand antiseptic................Dave
