You don't realise how good the SGL team is until ...

I recently tried to sign up to another internet astro forum and, reading the t&c, noted a bit of a repeated whinge about people slagging them off on other internet sites. Doesn't sound like the people I know, I thought, and proceeded to go through their application process. I got all the way to the end and was presented with the message that my application had not been successful because "we do not approve of spammers"?. So I used their contact page to send a message explaining what had happend and said "You say you don't approve of spammers. Neither do I. What's the problem?" After over two weeks, I have not received so much as the courtesy of an acknowlegement. And they wonder why people would slag them off on other sites ...

I run a forum on a completely different subject and most forum software will have some sort of anti-spam protection on their registration process otherwise they would have hundreds of automated fake registrations per day posting porn, drugs and malware all over the place. Sometimes we find real people being blocked by the protection software and it is usually down to their email domain, internet provider or IP address appearing on some sort of blacklist.

Try googling the individual details you used to register to see if you get anything back linking any of it to a spammer blacklist. I had it myself once where one of the servers in the ISP I use had been blacklisted after being hacked.

All that said, they sound like a bunch of moaners so you are probably best staying here on SGL ?

If Astronomy, both practical and theoretical is a big part of your lives, then
for a Forum base of operations, SGL stands alone, no question about that.
I wish I could be at the October Lucksall SP but circumstances don't permit it this time around,
For those who are going I wish you all a great time, and good skies to go with it.
Enjoy. :icon_salut::icon_salut:.

Had to edit this, as I had jumped ahead a month ?.

As DRT said, the forums will be running anti spam/hacking software. On a few websites I built in the past they would receive targeted hacking attempts from certain isp's and countrys, it was much easier to block a small percentage of addresses with a certain signature than risk a lot of work and money going down the pan.

I think it's good to just let folks join then judge them based on their merit and ability to at least stay within the clear and present rules. The moderators can then take it from there, the forum itself one may find is not up to standard as those we judge are also judging us. It is always a two way street no matter how high one thinks he is seated. SGL seems to have nailed it.

Joined and left a couple of groups, some folk seem to join with the sole aim of slagging off other members, no interest in the subject so their only aim is to try and get a reaction from somebody.

Depending on the mods some are banned quickly  others allowed to carry on for days, interesting if you want a pointless argument ( reminds me of Monty Python for some reason ) but generally I ignore them.

All right, I can understand that one of the servers my stuff is sent through (over which I have no control ... but that's another point) may have been blacklisted, but the fact remains that they are the ones who would know this and their "second word is off" attitude in their (lack of) response to my query is way below the standard of behaviour that I have (usually) received from those in charge of this forum.
