If only hand holding the binoculars, don't get heavy ones with too high a magnification; you will be shocked at how fast your arms will get tired. Only way around that is either mount them on something like a camera tripod or post or get expensive image stabiliser binoculars.

I do most of my observing in France, 100kms SW of Toulouse, though have been kept in England for family reasons this summer.  Heading south in about ten days time for five or six weeks.  I bet my certain age beats your certain age but if you are anywhere near Toulouse please get in touch.  I have a variety of telescopes and binoculars you could try.
