Hello from Germany

Hello SGL!

I am not new to amateur astronomy, but I am new to SGL. I have lurked around for a couple of years, but never bothered with signing up.

I am recent transplant to Germany from the US. I currently have a Zhumell Z10 and I am thinking of picking up a second more portable dob, like a ES 12" UL Dobsonian. I am used being able to set up my Z10 in the back yard and getting good views, and my move has put in a position that requires a more mobile scope.

Thanks in advance! I look forward to being part of the community.

Willkommen in Deutschland! (from a German stargazer; Dobsonaut; visual only). Where are you residing (approx.)? I'm living in the rural Odenwald region (between Heidelberg and Frankfurt); a good place to observe DSO's. If you are interested, you can PM me.

Thank you for the welcome! I am actually on the other side of Frankfurt from you south of Geissen. We have pretty good dark sky's, however I have not had a chance to get a good viewing session to test the skys.

You might visit the Sternwarte Burgsolms, about 30 km to the west of you. It's one of the oldest observatories for stargazers in Germany, well renowned; equipped with a 16" f/5 and a very interesting 6" f/15 Coudé refractor. Website (in German only):

http://www.sternwarte-burgsolms.de/

And, if you are looking for a more lightweight (and excellent!) Dobsonian, just visit these nice folks in Diez/Lahn (not so far away) and try their 12" or 16":

http://www.hofheiminstruments.com/

(of course, no affiliation etc., just a pleased owner of the 8")

I did not know there was an observatory in Solms. That is about 10 minutes from my house!

Those scopes look amazing.

Might save you the expenses for a new scope, their skies seem to be reasonably dark (green/grey zone according to www.lightpollutionmap.info)

But still:

They are, indeed; very sophisticated; and cabinet-grade woodwork by skilled model makers. The carpenter's ruler truss poles of the 8" may look flimsy, but work very well - the 8" f/4, once built up, hardly needs collimation. But you have to place an order in time; the list of people waiting for a scope is long! (esp. the 16", I've heard). Way more expensive than a ES dob; but you get what you pay for.
