S2\S0–2 star - nearest approach to Sagittarius A*

Recommended Posts

Amazing physics at work recently when the star S2 did it nearest approach to the black hole at the center of our galaxy in May

S2 was travelling at 2.5% the speed of light at nearest approach - lots of animations and info on this on the web including animations of all the stars and paths that orbit Sagittarius A* - fascinating stuff !

A remarkably precise observation. As the paper puts it     "....demonstrates the hundred-fold improvement of astrometry between SHARP in the 1990s (≈ 4 mas precision) and NACO in the 2000s (≈ 0.5 mas) to GRAVITY in 2018 (as small as ≈ 30 µas). "
