Looks like a fuzzy smudge in images too.

Maybe because it is a fuzzy smudge.

Averted viewing is the way to go for viewing DSO's / 'fuzzies'.

I made this inverted colour image some time back using Stellarium.
This is my favoured method for sighting M31, coming from cassiopeia towards Mirach, then back a tad, and in this image, that smudge depicting M31 is about as good as it gets from my garden, but away from home/lights, M31 can fill the view.
